Nicholas served in the 1st Battallion Coldstream Guards for 62 years from September 13th 1820. He was Household Drummer Bugle Major to HM George IVth, HM William IVth and HM Queen Victoria. There is a painting of him in Birdcage Walk, London. On September 13th 1870, he received a certificate form the Leeds Rifles to commemorate 50 years of service.
